PRSSA Leadership Rally
Hello all! I had the opportunity this past weekend to attend PRSSA Leadership Rally in sunny Scottsdale, Arizona! It was a conference for chapter presidents with workshops, luncheons, and networking. I’ve got so many great ideas for UWEC PRSSA and wanted to share my experience!
First of all, after 3 hours on a plane, I got to the airport shuttle bus with expectations of a boring ride. However, a very nice guy immediately asked me if I was here for PRSSA. We were in intense PR conversation the whole way there. Turns out the whole time I was talking to PRSSA National President Brian Price (Whoops! Starstruck).
After a beautiful 103-degree afternoon of lying out and swimming, we attended the opening ceremony with great food and lots of people. Meeting everyone at first was overwhelming, but we immediately started talking about our chapters and how they were different, how they were similar, and new ideas for the upcoming year.
The next day was packed with workshops and speeches, none of which I was ever bored of. Gary McCormick was our keynote speaker who presented us with “What Disney can teach us about leadership.” I thought it was pretty clever, considering I wrote a blog post on almost the same thing (great minds think alike). We also learned about ethics, diversity, leadership in e-boards, best practices, and strategic planning.
Fundraising was a big part of this rally, and a lot of chapters had some great ideas. One school played Justin Bieber’s song “Baby” outside of their main campus building. They said they would turn it off as soon as they raised $100; people were easily annoyed and gave it to them! They did this with many other songs and ended up raising around $900. There are a lot more ideas that I will send our treasurer Hanna!
My favorite part of this weekend was meeting everyone. I got a lot of comments on my “Midwest accent,” but I also got a lot of insight on how to make PRSSA better locally. We all shared what worked for our chapter and how we could improve on the things we needed most. As Gary McCormick said: “There are no new ideas, just some great stolen ones.”
Going to our sessions of PRSSA every week makes you excited about PR, but attending PRSSA national events makes you passionate. You come in contact with so many people who have so many great ideas and want nothing but to network and befriend you. This is why I encourage EVERYONE to attend National Conference in the fall. It’s expensive, but I’m sure the past e-board can confirm that you get your money’s worth.
PRSSA is an incredible international organization with professionals who are always available to help you on your journey as a PR expert. I brought back a TON of great ideas for the upcoming year – and I can’t wait to implement some of them and share them with you! Your e-board has been working hard to get the year started strong. So fasten your seatbelts and get ready for take off of another exciting year in PRSSA! (but first enjoy your summer!)
